[/blockquote]After a year with without a boss, Mark J. Shoebridge has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Uganda Telecom (UTL). The appointment was announced yesterday by the Chairman board of directors UTL Mr. Stephen Kaboyo. Mark will return to UTL effective 8th February 2016. He was the Acting MD after Mr Ali Amir resigned in February 2015 a position he held for over four months before he left UTL to take up a new opportunity in Vodafone Nigeria as the Executive Head of Operations.
At the time of Mark’s departure from UTL, he held the substantive position of Chief Fixed Services Officer a potion he held for 2 years 3 months since 2013. In his letter to the UTL employees on behalf of the board that this blog has seen, Board Chairman Mr Kaboyo thanked the current executive management team led by Mr. Godfrey Kisekka supported by Mr David Nambaale, Mr. Arif Ameer, and Mr John Sendikaddiwa, for the commendable over the last six months. He encouraged them to render support to the incoming MD and work as a team in order to ensure high level of staff morale, operational, business efficiency and continuity.
Marks comes at a time when the company is struggling to stay relevant on Uganda’s telecom scene. It’s no secret that Uganda’s oldest telecom firm is facing serious financial problems up to a tune of more than UGX 366 billion in liabilities that threaten to collapse the company. Mid last year, the Libyan Foreign Affairs minister, Mohamed Dayri revealed that his government will help sort out the financial challenges affecting UTL to a tune of $56 million. The Liberian government owns 69% of the shares in UTL while the Government of Uganda has 31% shares in stake.
