Fresh out of  stamping (once again) the 70% local content directive to broadcast media houses in Uganda, the regulator, UCC has now shifted hands to sharing exact broadcast media houses numbers, their reach, mode of transmission among others.

This was revealed in a twitter thread under the hastag #SectorStats earlier today. Its now been two years since we switched over from analogue transmission and embraced digital transmission for television broadcasts. Radios however still transmit in analogue.

Sofar Uganda has 7 operational Pay TV players and these include DSTV, Startimes, GoTV, StarSat, Zuku TV, Azam TV and lastly Simba TV. Of these 2 use digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) that is GoTV and Startimes,  4 are using direct to home (DTH) satellite transmission. These are DSTV, StarSat, Zuku TV and lastly Azam TV. Simba TV is the only TV player licenced to use cable TV.

The 4 players that are said to have a countrywide reach are the ones transmitting over satellite.

Finally Uganda has over 292 operational FM stations. However these still transmit over analogue with preparations to switch them to digital in the foreseeable future as once told by UCC.
