With less than a week to the May 19th SIM registration deadline, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has released the SIM verification status per carrier. Prior to the exercise, UCC requested all telecoms to submit the SIM card usage on their respective mobile networks and from the latest information, telecom giants MTN and Airtel have over 5.1% and 8.5% unverified SIM cards respectively that must be verified by next week. Africell has over 85, 898 unverified SIM cards and UTL 16, 781.

The stats further reveal some figures, we’ve always wanted to know. Like how many subscribers industry followers Vodafone, Smile and Smart telecom have, well it turns out that they have 29,809, 10,107 and 50,619 subscribers respectively. K2 has 43,864 verified SIM cards while Tangerine, the new 4G LTE provider is yet to verify only 80 SIM cards.
Have you registered your SIM card with your National ID? Well, the deadline is just next week and we are yet to see the impact of this exercise to Uganda’s mobile telecommunication sector.
