Remember the days of MTN’s kabiliti and Airtel’s Katikitiki that ushered in affordable dumb-phones which introduced many Ugandans to mobile communications. This week, one of Uganda’s new telecom network Smart Telecom has launched Kyali (loosely translated as buddy or close friend), a low-cost feature phone with smartphone like capabilities since it comes pre-installed with popular social media apps like Whats App and Facebook. At costing only UGX 39,000 ($ 14) this phone makes you forget Microsoft’s recently announced $ 29 Nokia 215, since it has supports both 2G and 3G networks.
“Phone actually costs UGX 12,500”
Unlike smartphones that have poor battery life, Kyali can last you at least 7 days and you push more out of it in stand by time. It comes bundled with 500MB of data, and airtime of UGX 6,500 monthly for half a year, at this rate you are getting the phone at UGX 12,500 considering 500MB costs about UGX 20,000.
Just like MTN Uganda, Smart telecom used this chance to announce its social pack which also costs UGX 2,000. The social pack will give you unlimited access to social media sites which allows you to stay online with friends and family 24/7.
