MTN releases pretty impressive 2013 results: Claims to be the best data provider in Uganda

 Today morning, MTN Uganda is celebrating the strong annual results for the year 2013 that were announced by CEO Mazen Mroue at Serena Hotel. The occasion was graced by ICT minister Hon Peter Thembo and the Minister for Karamoja Hon. Janet Museveni. The company has a lot to announce.

159% of mobile data revenues

The MTN CEO revealed in his speech that they have about 1200 employees and half the number of those positions are occupied by women. The company’s subscriber base has increased across the group, with over 8.8 million subscribers in Uganda. By the end of 2013, Mobile Data revenues grew by 159% and Mobile Money subscribers continue growing hitting 47% increase in the last year.

The CEO was proud to announce that they have had an increase in market share despite the competition, as MTN Mobile Money continues to lead in Uganda.

We managed to register 96% subscribers by September 2013. 4% were disconnected for non registration. 69% of MTN Uganda customers are registered with MTN Mobile Money which is a good thing says CEO. As of 31st December 2013, we had Mobile Money subscription of 5.2 million and market penetration of 44%.[/blockquote]

The biggest tax payer in Uganda

The biggest telecom giant continues to remit taxes and is the biggest tax payer in Uganda.  The CEO admitted that due to the price wars (sparked off by Warid and Airtel) in 2011, there has been growth in taxes paid by MTN Uganda as compared to 2011.  MTN has contributed over UGX 68 billion ($27 million) to the Rural Development Community fund. The company is still committed to employing more Ugandans with more than 500,000 people benefiting from this directly.

Network quality continues to improve

Speaking about their infrastructure, the CEO announced that they cover over  175,000Km with MTN’s fibre out of the 250,000km that Uganda has. MTN’s Network quality continues to improve as UCC targets were met in 2013. Only 2 operators Orange and MTNUgandahave met the UCC network targets. (Less than 2% in terms of dropped calls).  Hon. Nyombi Thembo Minister of State for Information and Communications Technology said in his remarks that the government is handling Vandalism of Telecom equipment to attract more investment

Karamoja gets MTN Donation

From the More than 20,000 participated in the MTNMarathon UGX 400 Million ($ 159,200) was collected and the company donated the proceeds to the people of Karamoja. The MTN Uganda Chairman Charles Mbire said that

First Lady Janet Museveni Thanked MTN on behalf of the people of Karamoja and emphasized that they are deserving of this donation. She further congratulated MTNUganda .

As you see in the tweet above, the Chairman claimed that MTN was the best ISP in the country. We wonder if they claim to be the best in terms of speeds, volumes or number of subscribers ? As this position was held by another operator in recent history. –
