Apple has finally unveiled the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus today. The new iPhones as expected are not revolutionary in design and look much like the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6Plus. But what’s entirely new is the phone’s IP 67 water and dust resistance, which means you can get the iPhone 7 wet without worry. Also new is the long-rumored dual camera system, stereo speakers, and a darker black color scheme. And, as has been rumored, the iPhone 7 does not have a headphone jack, rendering countless 3.5mm headphones useless with the device.

The home button is now non-mechanical as it is force sensitive.  Unique taptic feedbacks will be used for actions, messages, notifications, ringtones, and other apps through the Taptic Engine API. The camera is a huge advance and comes with a new 12mp sensor that’s 60 percent faster and 30 percent more energy efficient. It also has optical stabilization, f1.8 aperture lens and new six-element lens. There’s even a new TrueTone flash with four LEDs that has a flicker sensor to make photos in artificial lighting look better. Front-facing camera is now 7 megapixels with auto image stabilization. It should be noted that the iPhone 7 Plus will have the dual camera setup. This allows for a wide-angle and a telephoto for real zooming. With two cameras and two lenses users will be able to create a zoom feature in the iPhone up to 10x zooming.

Apple, of course, isn’t first to do dual-lens cameras. LG, Huawei have already done this. But Apple has always made the case that its combination of hardware and software will produce better photos. The dual cameras on the 7 Plus can also create a depth map to find the subjects of a photo and blur the background. There’s a new photo style called “portrait” that allows you to create a depth effect. The display is a Retina HD display with 25 percent brighter, wide color gamut, color management with 3D Touch. Also finally, there are Stereo speakers on the iPhone!

New Audio Experience with Airpods

Apple Airpods

As was rumored before the iPhone 7 will have no headphone jack, now connecting over the Lightning port. Apple will also supply the 3.5 mm jack dongle in the box for free. To add onto the new wireless music experience, a new product from Apple called Apple AIrPods was unveiled. The wireless headphones are powered by a new Apple W1 chip that handles audio and wireless connection. Infrared sensors detect when they’re in your ear. Motion accelerometers detect touch to activate Siri. “Voice accelerometers” enhance your voice. Five hours of charge, charging case 25 hours of battery life. The battery and charger built into the case of the earphones.

There’s no buttons, there’s no switching, there’s no pairing, no unpairing, all things of the past. So far the biggest value proposition of these might just be not having to go into a list of Bluetooth devices in Settings to pair them. A “connect” prompt is supposed to pop up on your phone when you take headphones out of their little case. The AirPods will ship late October and cost $159.  Beats is also coming out with a new line of headphones that uses the W1 chip. New Beats Solo 3 wireless headphones will come with 40 hours of wireless and there is also Powerbeats 3 wireless a new Beats S line of wireless headphones.

The most powerful chip ever in a smartphone

The new iPhones will come with a new 64-bit four-core processor chip called A10 Fusion. Apple says it is 40x faster than A9 in the 6S, 2x faster than the A8, this means the iPhone 7 20x faster than the original iPhone. It has two high-efficiency cores that run at 1/5th the power. Low-power apps run on the efficiency cores, all automatically controlled by a new power controller. There is a new GPU as well which is 240x faster than the original iPhone. A10 Fusion will enable “console level gaming,” which is basically something we hear every year. Apple has called its chip the most powerful processor in any smartphone.

Device will be available in Gold, silver, rose gold, black and the premium offering the Jet Black version. Apple says the new phone will be available for purchase on September 16th, though pre-orders starting September 9th. iPhone 7 starts at $ 649, starts at 32GB. Goes to 256GB and Plus starts at 769, 32 to 256GB. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are also getting the storage bump as well.
