[/blockquote]When a major telecom regulator issues a warning, we better not take it lightly. This week, Ofcom UK’s communication regulator has warned in a research publication that Christmas Tree Lights can slow down your home WiFi and this could affect your internet speeds. They have, however, not left their citizens hanging and have released a smartphone app for both Android and iOS that allows them to check their connection and identify if your WiFi is not performing as it should be.
Several things can affect your broadband speeds; the time and day you go online, the number of simultaneous connections to your home WiFi or the distance you are from the telecom mast. Ofcom’s publication details that for some people the problem is much closer to home and it could be their own home WiFi. The cause of this slowing has been attributed to something as simple as interference from other electronic devices, such as a microwave oven, baby monitor, stereo speakers, OLED Plasma TVs, LED lamps – or even Christmas fairy lights. All the mentioned electronic equipment can slow down broadband even if you have a great 3G or 4G-LTE connection.
The downside is that the mobile app that Ofcom has developed may be infected with the “not available in your country” syndrome which will make it hard for some of you to test. But for those who are curious and can get the apk, you can install the app on your phone and follow the steps below;
- Make sure you are connected to your home WiFi, open the app and press start
- It takes a few moments to complete and it will tell you whether your WiFi is giving you the best service possible
- If the app finds a glitch, it will suggest simple troubleshooting tips to help fix the problem
