aYo, a micro insurance product is a joint venture between MTN and MMI holdings, a South African financial services group and one of the products culminating from this partnership is;  aYo Send with Care. aYo Send with Care is an insurance product from aYo Uganda that allows Mobile Money users to purchase insurance cover every time they send money to a beneficiary (Mobile Money Recipient).

For every amount you send, aYo Uganda triples it as cover and is payable within 120 days, after which the cover expires.  Payments are extended to the beneficiary’s mobile account after tragedy strikes in 12 equal monthly installments. This means the more money you send within the days in question, the higher your cover accumulates.

“Adding aYo Send with Care to MTN Mobile Money transfers means that, should you be hospitalised for a night or more due to an accident or in the unfortunate event of your passing, aYo will pay triple the amount you sent to your beneficiaries and pay it out in 12 equal monthly instalments,Reads a statement from Ayo.

Send with Care charges 5%  of your spend to cover costs on one’s Mobile Money account. The 5% premium is independent of the mobile money charges by MTN. You can earn a bonus which is 10% of the premium charged, place claims of up to a maximum of UGX 2,500,000 using the aYo Uganda’s USSD menu.

While sending money over Mobile Money, select aYo Send with Care when prompted or dial *165*1*4# to access its menu. aYo Uganda has another product in the pipeline called called Recharge with Care, which offers life and hospital cover every time you recharge your MTN account.


The two products now join MoKash in leveraging MTN’s Mobile Money user base to offer financial products to the unbanked who have sought solace in Mobile Money since bigger financial/insurance players exclude them from their pool.

MoKash has been on steroids but we are yet to tell if these two will score the same level of success given insurance penetration stands lower than 1% in Uganda, curtailed by a large informal sector, unawareness of insurance policies and their benefits amongst a host of issues, with efforts to allow bankers join the sector and offer policies so as spur growth in the industry seen as some sort of revival. But until legislation to allow so is effected, aYo Send with Care and aYo ReCharge with Care with their limitations are a positive addition to the insurance sector.
