Six companies and counting, Apple seems to be on a roll of buying companies and start ups this year. According to Rapidus, Apple has reportedly snapped up Swedish mobile data compression start up AlgoTrim. Data compression isn’t the sexiest of subjects, but after Facebook pledged to chop down its digital footprint, now it’s suddenly hot news.
It is believed that AlgoTrim’s has been acquired in the prospects that it will slim down iOS device data usage — as the outfit’s JPEG files are apparently six times smaller than the average. Other sources believe that, however, the deal may hint at a move towards computational photography as used in Nokia’s Pure view technology.
