The Airtel CEO, Mr Raghu announced the departure of Anwar Soussa, the current Managing Director from Airtel Uganda who has been at the helm of the company for about a year and 2 months. In a email he sent to staff, the Group CEO assured employees that the MD has made a decision to take up an opportunity outside Airtel. Mr Anwar joined Airtel in May 2015 as the Managing Director in Chad and subsequently moved to Uganda in June 2016 to take up his current role. Under his leadership, Uganda was awarded the Best performing mobile network operator (Opco) in Africa, Best OpCo in data growth and Best OpCo in distribution excellence at the 2017 Dubai Conclave.
VG Somasekhar is no stranger to Uganda
VG Somasekhar, currently Director – Special Projects, will be taking over from Anwar effective 1st of September, 2017. He will report directly to the CEO Africa. Soma as he has always been referred to, was the Managing Director for Airtel Uganda from December 2010 to February 2014. He thereafter joined the Africa HQ office as the Executive Operations Director & SBU Head – Leader markets; and served in this role until July 2015.
